Introduction to Zeeshawn Beg

Hi!

I'm Zeeshawn, a Microbiology major, med school hopeful, and computer enthusiast. I was born in Pakistan and my family immigrated to Oklahoma when I was just a couple months old. I still love to watch cricket. I can't see it live though because of the time zones it's always early in the morning.

("Wahab Stuns Hosts! | England vs Pakistan Match Highlights | ICC Cricket World Cup 2019" at youtube)

One of my favorite classes has been Chinese Literature. I had never really learned much about Chinese history, so this class really opened my eyes and helped me understand recent history. The book/story that affected me the most in that class was the Iron Child by Mo Yan.

I've also been trying to learn to draw. The idea of being able to create something has really motivated me and especially being able to see great art anytime on the internet has helped fuel this. I've been using drawabox to learn the fundamentals and I feel like I've made some progress. I'm definitely not where I want to be, but I feel like I'll get there slowly and steadily. Another big motivator for me has been video games. Games like Hollow Knight have such amazing artwork and atmosphere in them. I really feel like video games can be one of the highest forms of art because so many different mediums can be represented in them. You have the visual art, audio, and storytelling all coming together immerse you into a world.

It makes me want to be able make something like that. I know it's kind of unrealistic to think like that, but I hope to at least make something that could considered "good" whatever that means.

I am the oldest of 3. I have a little brother who's 17 and a little sister who's 9. I live at home and commute to campus whenever I need to be there. This is my last semester at OU and hopefully I'll be fortunate enough to get into medical school for next year. I'm looking forward for this semester and hope everyone stays safe!

  1. Props to you for doing wanting to go to med school! I personally could never do that. I also wish I could draw but I know I will never be able to. I do appreciate art though. I just know I will never be one to create any myself. I think if you keep working at creating art you will be able to, practice makes perfect. Also I am the youngest of three siblings so we are at the opposite sides of our families.

  2. Hi Zeeshawn! Wow, good luck on your journey into medical school! That is very impressive. My parents are from Pakistan too! They moved here before I was born. That is really cool that you are able to live at home. I love hanging out with my family, and although I have an apartment in Norman, I go back home every weekend which is like 40 minutes to hang out with my family :)

  3. I follow a lot of Indian news Twitter, and it is FULL of cricket news, Zeeshawn... so even though I know nothing about the game (truly: NOTHING), I recognize the names of players now just from seeing everybody all excited about that in Indian Twitter! And that combination of different media in video games is why I like writing stuff for the web instead of in print: online, you can put images with your writing, and music too (if you embed YouTube videos)... so, hopefully some of that good videogame experience will inspire your storytelling in this class so that you can create a good experience for your readers! You might even want to learn about Twine, which is free storytelling software that lets you "program" a choose-your-own adventure type of story, making your story into something even more like a game! More about Twine at Twinery.org :-)

  4. Hi, Zeeshawn!

Wow, Pakistan to Oklahoma is certainly a move! Hopefully, one day America will have a cricket league that can compare and you can enjoy some games in real time. Congrats on finishing up your time here at OU! It's too bad that it had to be during this weird time. I hope you get into whichever med school you have your eyes on.

Hollow Knight is a fantastic game! I'm glad to see it inspired you to explore some artistic hobbies.

  5. Hi Zeeshawn!
After reading your intro, you're making me what to look into Chinese Literature and read the Iron Child! I'm super intrigued! Also, I agree about wishing America had Cricket, I wish America had a lot of sports that other countries love, we should definitely expand! But I'm so happy for you finishing up at OU this semester! I really hope you get into Medical School!

  6. Hi Zeeshawn,

Okay, I've only seen a little bit about cricket, and I totally didn't know that it had a World Cup! I'm going to add that video to my "To Watch" list. I wish you the best of luck with medical school. I think it's really cool that you seem to be a creative person (with the drawing), but you're also wanting to practice medicine. I'm excited to see what kind of stories you write this semester because you seem to have all kinds of different inspiration to pull from. Best of luck this year!

Thank you for sharing a little bit about who you are! I think that is so cool how you moved from Pakistan to Oklahoma when you were younger! What sparked such a big move? Also, that is so cool how passionate you are about cricket. I was unaware they had a World Cup! Also, good luck with medical school! It won't be easy, but I know you can do it! I look forward to reading your stories! Best of luck!

  12. Hi Zeeshawn, congratulations on almost making it! I hope your last semester has still been amazing so far, COVID and all. I think that although it is scary and changing a lot, there are some beautiful things to be appreciated about this time, like more down time to be intentional with loved ones or to pick up new interests or self-improvement habits. Good luck in the post-college life! Also, it's so cool that you like Chinese history and stories, because now with this class, you have some experience in lots of international epics and history!
    Best,
    Rachel

  15. Hey Zeeshawn! I think it's so cool that you were born in Pakistan but moved to the States! I also enjoy watching cricket, as I think it is such a unique sport and not appreciated enough here! It's fun to watch because of how strong of a role it plays culturally in other countries. I hope you've had a great semester and good luck with Pre-Med!

  16. Hi Zeeshawn! I also am graduating this semester! I hope you have had a good last semester and that you have still had the experiences you wanted for your last semester here at OU! 17. Hi Zeeshawn! I have never seen a cricket match(?) before so I was not sure what to expect when opening the video. After watching the video, however, I am even more confused! It seemed extremely competitive and had a lot of action that was happening very quickly. I can definitely see why it would be a fun sport to follow, but I had no clue what the rules were. Regardless, it seems like a sport that I would be interested in learning more about as it had a lot of energy going on on both teams. It was nice to meet you!

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

I think the feedback I've been receiving has been pretty good. The better ones are definitely from the 150-word assignments where people use the WWW or TAG method. Storytelling has never been my strong suit so the class has been helpful for me.  I hope the comments I've been leaving have been useful. I try to focus more on any questions that the reading has left me with. Things like questioning why people did what they did. I like the WWW feedback method the most. Mostly because it's really easy to remember,  The intro posts have been an alright way to get to know people. I think it's definitely less of a connection than being physically together for a couple hours every week. For an all online class though I think it works. I think with feedback, a lot of people are scared of being harsh or mean, so they may not give feedback fully. I think I need to read more critically because I definitely also do this. Week 13 Story: Arthur? Really?

( BOTW by m4mystery) Arthur? Really? Arthur looked up from the stone, sword in hand. This was the fourth time he had to pull the sword and to be honest, he was getting rather tired of it. The first time, he had just grabbed the sword because his brother had forgotten his sword at home and he couldn't get into his house. The other two were because the people he told about the sword just couldn't believe him. First, he did it in front of his father and brother, who then went to get the magician Merlin and the Archbishop for whom he once again pulled the sword. They had advised that he pull it once against though, this had all happened in the middle of a festival in which the kingdom's greatest knights had gathered to attempt to pull the sword from the stone and claim the kingdom for their own.  He looked around at the faces staring at him in disbelief. Arthur was neither a knight or a squire, so seeing him pull the sword with such ease almost seemed like a trick. Eventuall...
