Week 11 Story: Coyote's Plan

 Coyote's Plan

A long time ago, before there were food webs before there were predators, and before there was prey. Kareya was creating the beings of the world. He sat and created Man and all the animals. For a time they all existed together equally. No one knew who was more powerful than who and who would be eaten by who. This left the world in great chaos. There was no order and no one could eat. Eventually, Kareya decided to have Man create Bows and Arrows for all the animals. These would decide who was most powerful and who would be hunted by who. Man began to make the bows. It took 9 full days of nonstop work to craft them all.

Before the day the bows were to be given out, all the animals gathered together for one last night before they were given their power. Everyone was here from the large cougar to the tiny frog. They all gathered around the fire and prepared for the night. The Coyote, though, had other plans. He wanted to stay up and be the first to receive the greatest and most powerful bow. He faked a yawn and stretch over his spot appearing to be asleep. As the others dozed off, Coyote stayed awake and quietly chuckled to himself.  He thought he would definitely be the first to receive a bow.

The night dragged on and Coyote found himself drifting to sleep. He decided that he needed to stay active to remain awake and claim his prize. He started to pace around the camp. This stopped working though as he stumbled through the night. He then decided to start running and jumping, but this was so loud that the other animals started to wake up. They told him to be quiet so he laid down and tried to think of something else. He decided to put wooden stakes in his eyes to keep them open. He then sat there with his eyes propped open. Sadly though, even this was not enough. He eventually fell asleep. When the time came for everyone to get their bows, all the animals gathered around Man and wait to receive their bow. He started with Cougar who received the largest, strongest bow and after giving everyone a bow he had just one left, but no animals.

They all looked over to see Coyote still fast asleep. The animals all ran over and started laughing and dancing over him. He awoke and realized he missed the bows. He was then given the last, smallest bow. It could barely shoot a few feet forward. Man took pity on him though and gave him much more cunning than the other animals. This is why Coyote is so smart.

Author's Note: I tried to stick pretty closely to the original plot of the story. I retold it in my own words. The original story talks more about what happened before the building of the bows. I took this out because I didn't think it would be necessary.

  1. Hey Zeeshawn! I really enjoyed reading your story this week. I thought it was very well written and you have a very clear writing style. I didn't notice any grammatical errors which is always impressive! The set up of your website as well added to the ease and clarity of your writing. The Mr. Bean picture was a fun surprise too, haha!

Introduction to Zeeshawn Beg

Hi! I'm Zeeshawn, a Microbiology major, med school hopeful, and computer enthusiast. I was born in Pakistan and my family immigrated to Oklahoma when I was just a couple months old. I still love to watch cricket. I can't see it live though because of the time zones it's always early in the morning.  ("Wahab Stuns Hosts! | England vs Pakistan Match Highlights | ICC Cricket World Cup 2019" at youtube ) One of my favorite classes has been Chinese Literature. I had never really learned much about Chinese history, so this class really opened my eyes and helped me understand recent history. The book/story that affected me the most in that class was the Iron Child by Mo Yan.  I've also been trying to learn to draw. The idea of being able to create something has really motivated me and especially being able to see great art anytime on the internet has helped fuel this. I've been using drawabox  to learn the fundamentals and I feel like I've made some progress.

Week 7 Story: The Devil's Lair

( Jomblang Cave by Thomas Fuhrmann)   The Devil's Lair The Monkey King Sun Wu Kong stood before the mighty entrance of the Devil-King's lair. He had taken Sun Wu Kong's kin and had to be put in his place. This could not be forgiven. As the Monkey King entered the underground chamber, the servants of the Devil-King trembled. Sun Wu Kong's terrible rage and battle prowess was well known. They didn't know if even their own King could defeat him.  "Hey!" bellowed the stone ape, "Give me back my kids!!" evidently he wanted to try negotiation first. Stammering, the Devil-King responded, "Wait don't you want to fight me?" He had not expected the legendary Sun Wu Kong to reason before using his brawn. "Of course, but I'm trying to control myself so they don't have to see your sorry state after I'm done with you." The Devil-King didn't even know how to react. He just stared in disbelief. "How could he be so ca
